A year to remember for Jonny Bairstow

What a rebirth for a player who has found himself back in Test cricket. Bairstow’s contribution with the bat was so impressive that he was unlucky not to earn a spot among our list of middle order batsmen. His 1231 runs were the fifth-highest in the qualification period –
and they came in all conditions, against varied opposition and new spots in the order, such as when promoted to No.5 in Mohali where he posted a defiant 177-ball 89. Not enough? Bairstow had the most prolific year for a wicketkeeper in 2016 – notching a record 70 dismissals in a single year. Impressively, 55 of them – four via stumping – fell within the past 12 months, putting him clear in front of all his rivals.

14 Tests, 1231 runs at 55.95.
Two centuries. Top score of 167 not out.
51 catches, four stumpings.
